- Run the outboard at minimum throttle for the first 15 minutes. This will seat the piston rings and allow the lubricants to flow through the engine.
- Run the motor at approximately 10 percent to 30 percent throttle. This will put the engine speed at approximately 2,000 to 3,000 rpm.
- Open the throttle to between 50 percent and 80 percent. The engine speed should be from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm. You can do short full-throttle bursts, and if your boat planes easily, get the boat up on plane and then reduce the throttle. Try to do the first two hours all in one stretch. By the end of the first two hours, the engine should be running smoothly.
- Use the engine normally, but don't run it at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a stretch. When the 10 hour breaking-in period is done, use the engine normally. Replace the oil after 20 hours to flush out any loose metal shavings or debris.
