- 1). Shut off the water supply to the bath tub and open the hot and cold water valves to allow the pipes to drain.
- 2). Disassemble the faucet:
1. Remove the plastic caps (if there are any) on top of the faucet knobs by prying them up with a knife blade to give access to the screws that hold the knobs in place.
2. Remove the screws that hold the knobs in place by turning the screws counterclockwise with your screw driver.
3. Remove the escutcheon or protective cover from the stem. The escutcheon is the protective plate which is directly behind the faucet knobs or handles. Removing it will reveal the stem with two nuts--the stem nut (smaller nut on top) and the packing nut (bigger nut at the bottom).
4. Unscrew the packing nut (bigger nut at bottom of the stem nut) exposing the rest of the stem.
5. Remove the stem by rotating it in the "on" direction until it threads out. - 3). Replace the washer and clean any loose deposits or particles on the stem. You might need to take the stem to your local dealer to ensure an exact match in size and style. Inspect the brass screw and replace if it is damaged.
- 4). Put the stem back in reverse order from how you took it out. Reattach the packing nut with a socket wrench and then place the escutcheon or plate back.
- 5). Install the handles and fasten with them with the screws that you took out earlier. Put the handle caps on and open the shutoff valves.
