- 1). Purchase an anti-static mat and place it under your computer chair. The motion of the computer chair over a carpeted surface can result in a strong buildup of static electricity, but an anti-static mat can help to dissipate that static electricity and reduce the chances of damage to the computer.
- 2). Wear a grounding strap anytime you need to work inside your computer's case. While static electricity buildup can be dangerous even when your computer case is closed, it can be even more damaging if your computer case is open. Grounding straps are inexpensive to buy, and they can save your computer. You can purchase a grounding strap at many computer stores and electronics retailers, as well as many Internet shops.
- 3). Use your computer in a room with hardwood or tile floors if at all possible. Carpeted surfaces by their very nature will cause a buildup of static electricity, so moving your computer to a noncarpeted area will reduce the risk of harmful static electricity buildups.
- 4). Ground yourself each time you walk into the room where the computer is housed. Touching a piece of metal that is not attached to your computer will help to discharge the static electricity you built up while walking across a carpeted surface.
