- 1). Remove the screws holding the shower's drain cover in place with a screwdriver, then remove the drain cover. Feed a drain auger into the shower's drainpipe, spinning the auger's crank clockwise as you do.
- 2). Retract the auger from the drainpipe once you reach the end of the auger line. Spin the auger's crank counterclockwise until the end of the auger comes out of the drain opening.
- 3). Climb onto the house's roof using a ladder. Locate the vent pipe opening that sits above the bathroom where the sewage backup has been occurring, and remove any obstructions from the top of the vent pipe.
- 4). Look down the vent pipe with a flashlight to see if there are any clogs inside the pipe. Feed a drain auger into the pipe to remove the clog, or spray water down the vent pipe using your garden hose.
- 5). Check the cleanouts between your house and the sewer lines or septic tank. Remove the cleanout covers using a wrench and look inside the cleanout. If you see backed up water inside the cleanout, a major clog in the sewer drain line exists. Contact a plumber if you have a clog in the sewer drain line.
