- 1). Decide where you would like to install drapes. Not only should you choose which window you would like to hang drapes in, but you should also choose where you would like to install drapes around the window. By hanging the drapes above and to the outside of the actual window, you will make the window appear larger and the walls appear taller.
- 2). Read the instructions on the drapery rod. You may need special tools for the type of rod you purchased before you begin to install drapes. Scan the items in your rod kit to make sure that all the pieces you need are there before you begin. You do not want to begin installation only to find that a screw you need to complete the project was not included.
- 3). Measure the drapery rod. Correctly balance the rod above the window using this measurement. For instance, if your window is 36 inches wide and your drapery rod is 46 inches wide, then you would want to measure out five inches on each side of the window so that the window is centered below the drapery rod. Lightly mark the wall with a pencil.
- 4). Calculate how far below the ceiling you would like to place the drapery. Make the window and walls look taller by placing the drapery rod farther above the window and closer to the ceiling. If you would like to install drapes five inches below the ceiling, then measure down five inches from the ceiling and mark this area.
- 5). Intersect the two lines you have measured. This is where you will place your screw so mark it lightly with a pencil. This is also a good time to measure again for accuracy and make any changes before you place holes into the wall.
- 6). Screw in the drapery rod holders. Generally, these holders are somewhat L-shaped and hold the drapery rod. These holders are what is attached to the wall. The measurements you have taken are to hang these items.
- 7). Place the drapes on the drapery rod. If the drapes have two sides, make sure that the right side is facing inward toward the room. Slide the drapes onto the rod so that they bunch in the center and the ends of the rod are sticking out. Place the ends of the rod onto the drapery rod holders, and then spread the drapes evenly along the rod.
