- 1). Place the bike helmet on your head. The front of the helmet should be level and sit one- to two-finger widths above the eyebrows, as recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Adjust from this position.
- 2). Check the length of the Y straps, which should meet just below the ears. Some helmets will include an adjustable buckle below each Y strap. Other helmets entail sliding the Y straps in one direction or the other to adjust the length. The helmet is first removed in either case.
- 3). Check the fit of the chinstrap with the helmet back on your head. The strap will be snug but comfortable against the chain. To adjust, loosen the strap inside the buckle and shorten or lengthen the strap as needed. No more than one or two fingers should be able to fit between the strap and your chin.
- 4). Customize the fit by adjusting the stabilizer at the rear of the helmet. Not all helmets include this feature. The stabilizer is often a dial that can be turned in either direction---turning the stabilizer clockwise tightens the inner headband, making for a more snug fit.
