- According to the National Electrical Code (NEC) under article 240-3(b), there is minimum requirement for the circuit providing power to an electric stove. This circuit consists on a 40-amp double-pole breaker providing 220-volt power, six-gage copper wiring and a four-prong 220-volt electrical outlet. Larger breakers and wiring are allowed; however, anything smaller is a code violation.
- Some stoves have features that require more power than standard stoves. These features include extra burners, multiple ovens and electric grill tops. Referring to the stove's owner manual or the power consumption label on the back of the stove will identify stoves that require breakers and wiring greater than 40 amps.
- Some states and local jurisdictions have their own modifications to the NEC. The most common modification is a requirement for 50-amp breakers, wiring and 220-volt outlets. Local building departments will be able to provide information on all electrical requirements.
