- 1). Obtain a digital image of the cartoon that you want to use. If no digital image is available, scan the cartoon into a digital file with a resolution of about 720 dpi. This resolution offers enough detail to work with without creating a file size that's too large for most photo editing software. Save the image as a common graphic file type such as jpg or gif for editor compatibility.
- 2). Load the image into your photo editing program. The more features your program has, the better able it'll be to incorporate the cartoon into your photo.
- 3). Crop the cartoon image to contain only the character you want to use. Remove all other background from the image, getting as close to the character as possible. (The zoom features of your editing software will help.) Make everything in the image except the character white.
- 4). Select the white background of the image and use the invert function of your photo editing software to select everything but the background. Copy the selection to save the character to your clipboard.
- 5). Save the cropped image just in case of mishap. Load into your editing program the real picture you wish to use as a background.
- 6). Create a new layer on top of the picture. Paste the cartoon character onto the new layer. Use the box outlining the character to position and size it in the picture.
- 7). Perform any clean-up necessary to blend the cartoon character in with the picture. For example, you may need to alter the cartoon's contrast or brightness to better match that in the real picture or remove any remnants of background from the cartoon.
- 8). Use the "flatten" function of the editing software to merge the two layers, creating a single image with the cartoon character fully incorporated into the picture. Save the merged file to your hard drive.
