- 1). Chip out a section of the tile or counter top with a hammer and stone chisel to expose the sub-surface. Exposing the sub-surface provides a starting point for the tile removal.
- 2). Place the blade of the chisel between the sub-surface and the travertine tile or counter top. Tap the striking point of the chisel with the hammer repeatedly to cause the tile or counter top to break apart.
- 3). Continue chipping and breaking tiles or the slab until entire area is cleared of travertine. If removing only a section of a slab, mark the boundaries with a pencil and straight edge. Cut through the slab on the marked lines with a grinder or a circular saw with a stone blade.
- 4). Remove remaining dried thinset mortar from the sub-surface with the hammer and chisel. Clean remaining debris from sub-surface with a vacuum or hand broom.
