- 1). Calculate the air space or volume you need. Multiply the height, width and depth of the box in inches. Divide the total by 1,728. This will give you the volume in cubic feet.
- 2). Cut the top, bottom and four sides of the MDF board to the sizes you need using your jigsaw.
- 3). Take the front piece of MDF and trace a circle on it for the subwoofer using the template that came with the sub. If you don't have a template, trace around the subwoofer itself.
- 4). Drill a pilot hole inside the circle that you traced. Insert the blade of your jigsaw into the hole and cut along the circle to create the hole for the subwoofer.
- 5). Cut out a hole for the speaker terminal cup in your back piece of MDF.
- 6). Place one of the side pieces against the edge of the bottom piece and mark the spots where you will place the screws, 4 inches apart. Depending on the shape of the box the number of screws may be different. Repeat the process for the remaining sides and top.
- 7). Drill a hole the same size as the screw you are using into the MDF on each mark you made. Pre-drilling is important so the wood does not crack when you insert the screws.
- 8). Glue the side pieces to the top and bottom. Gluing the box together first will help make it airtight.
- 9). Drill the screws into each hole you have pre-drilled before the glue dries. Excess glue will squeeze out of the seams. Wipe it off before it dries.
- 10
Set the box aside and let the glue dry. - 11
Seal all the seams inside the box with silicon caulk. This will also help keep your box airtight. - 12
Let the silicon caulk dry. - 13
Place the speaker terminal cup into its hole on the back of the box. Place screws into the screw holes and attach the cup to the box by inserting the screws into the wood. - 14
Attach speaker wire to the subwoofer's speaker post. Place the subwoofer into the box and attach the speaker wire to the speaker terminal box. Attach the positive on the sub to the positive post on the cup. Lay the speaker in the hole until the trim of the speaker lays flat against the box. - 15
Screw the subwoofer to the box. You will want to use every screw hole around the trim and screw down as tight as you can without damaging the speaker. This will help keep the box airtight.
