- 1). Purchase a basic router. A router is a small, inexpensive hardware device that lets you network several computers through network cables and often has a wireless component that will let you network many wireless computers.
- 2). Buy or locate two or more computers with a wireless or wired network card. Virtually all computers have some type of network card and laptops usually have both types.
- 3). Install the router near the computer that needs a wired connection. Connect the wired computer to the router with a network cable from your router to your network card. Open a Web browser on that computer and enter the IP address in the router instructions, along with the provided user name and password. Read through the manual to learn all about the basic network options. Connect any other wired computers in the same way.
- 4). Open the Control Panel on your wireless computer and click on "Network Connections." Look for "View wireless networks." Select your network and choose "Connect."
- 5). Find an online networking course such as those offered on Lynda.com or a book that explains computer networking and try everything out on your home network. Some good tiles are "Home Networking Do-It-Yourself For Dummies" or "Networking Bible."
