- 1). Check your outdoor garbage cans. If the lids do not fasten tightly, purchase replacements that do. If you have a garage or a shed, relocate the garbage there and close the door before nightfall.
- 2). Bring any pet food or water inside in the evening. These can attract raccoons. Remove any other sources of standing water or food that you notice outside.
- 3). Remove any birdseed from the ground under feeders. You may wish to temporarily remove bird feeders from your yard to encourage the raccoons to go elsewhere.
- 4). Avoid growing plants that are particularly attractive to raccoons. These include sunflowers and corn. If you do have a vegetable garden, install an electric fence around it. Activate the fence in the evening.
- 5). Contact your local animal control office. Laws regarding wildlife control vary by state. In some areas, you may be able to shoot the raccoons once you obtain a permit. Other municipalities may prefer to send an animal control officer to your property to trap and remove the raccoon. Alternatively, set a trap yourself, then call animal control to remove it.
