How to Set Up Free-to-Air Satellite

    • 1). Stand the satellite dish tripod in your backyard. Loosen the screws on the collar at the top of the tripod with the Phillips screwdriver. Insert the pole at the bottom of the satellite dish through the collar. Tighten the screws.

    • 2). Loosen the screws on the collar at the front bottom of the dish with the Phillips screwdriver. Insert one end of the lateral support pole through the collar. Tighten the screws.

    • 3). Loosen the screws on the side of the LNB (low noise block amplifier) satellite module with the Phillips screwdriver. Place the LNB satellite module on the far end of the pole. Rotate the LNB so that its plastic front faces toward the dish. Tighten the screws.

    • 4). Screw one end of the coaxial cable into the coax output on the bottom of the LNB module.

    • 5). Run the coaxial cable into the home through an open window or a crack in a door. Run the coaxial cable along the baseboard of the wall until you reach the satellite receiver. Screw the free end of the coaxial cable into the satellite receiver.

    • 6). Download a FTA pointing application, for example, DishPointer (see Resources) for the iPhone or for an Android cell phone from the Web developer's website or through an App syncing program like the free iTunes (see Resources).

    • 7). Connect the cell phone connector on the cell phone cable to the cell phone. Connect the USB connector on the cell phone cable to a USB port on the computer.

    • 8). Follow the syncing commands on the syncing program to install the application on the cell phone. Quit the syncing program. Right-click the icon of the cell phone on the desktop. Select "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Remove the cell phone cable from the computer and from the cell phone.

    • 9). Launch the application on the cell phone. Insert the appropriate information in the text fields as necessary to detail your location. Aim the cell phone at the satellite dish tripod. Follow the onscreen prompts to locate the direction that the satellite dish must be aimed.
