- 1). Place a rag or towel over the drain opening in the bottom of the tub. This will prevent parts from being lost down the drain.
- 2). Locate the overflow plate. These are usually placed underneath the tub faucet. They are circular and about 3 inches in diameter.
- 3). Use a screwdriver (usually flathead) to remove the screws on the overflow plate.
- 4). Pull the overflow plate slowly away from the side of the tub. You may need to insert the edge of a flat-bladed screwdriver between the plate and the tub to pry it off. Take care not to scratch the tub as you work.
- 5). Continue to slowly pull the overflow plate away from the side of the tub. It will be attached to the plunger at the end of the linkage in the overflow tube. Pull the linkage up until the plunger comes out of the overflow tube.
- 6). Unclip the linkage from the rear of the drain switch. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers, if needed, to help you unclip the linkage.
- 7). Replace the overflow plate and up-and-down switch with a new one. In some overflow plates, you may be able to remove the switch separately, instead of replacing the whole plate.
- 8). Connect the linkage to the back of the new up-and-down switch or new overflow plate. Apply a light coat of silicone grease to the outside of the plunger at the end of the overflow linkage.
- 9). Insert the plunger into the overflow tube. Feed the linkage into the tube until the overflow cover is flush with the edge of the bathtub. Insert the screws into the overflow plate and tighten.
