How to Convert My Antenna to High Definition

    Adding a Missing Element

    • 1). Access Antennaweb.org to determine the structure's location relative to local digital broadcast towers, and to determine the correct antenna purchase.

    • 2). Acquire a VHF or UHF array, if one is missing from your existing setup.

    • 3). Disconnect the antenna feed from your home or any televisions currently using the array.

    • 4). Recruit a helper and set up an extension ladder. Wear a utility belt to carry screwdrivers, Antennaweb printout, compass, caulk and gun, diplexer and coax to the roof area. Carefully carry the antenna to the roof.

    • 5). Most VHF/UHF components may be attached to one another, if one element is not present. Locate brackets for missing components on the antenna. Using the appropriate screwdriver, carefully loosen the bracket.

    • 6). Insert the new element into the existing bracket. Tighten it most of the way using the appropriate screwdriver. Do not fully tighten it yet.

    • 7). Using the diplexer (signal combiner) and the 6-foot length of terminated RG-6 coax, connect the inputs from VHF and UHF elements, and the outputs to the lead entering the structure. Secure these using plastic zip ties as needed.

    • 8). Using the compass and printout from Antennaweb.org, average the azimuth measurements as indicated on the printout from all local digital towers. Use this average to align the array.

    • 9). Have your helper (on the ground) reattach a compatible television or digital decoder to the coaxial cable in the structure.

    • 10

Have your helper run a channel scan for digital channels. Make note of missing or intermittent reception.

    • 11

Slightly adjust the antenna array no more than 5 degrees in either direction.

    • 12

Have your helper repeat the channel scan and note the findings. Provided that your reception is satisfactory, move to Step 13. If not, repeat the antenna adjustment and channel scan routine.

    • 13

After reception is satisfactory, fully tighten the array using the appropriate screwdriver.

    • 14

Take the opportunity to seal any gaps in the existing junction point between the roof and the antenna base, using silicone caulk.

    • 15

Have your helper assist you in descending the extension ladder.

    • 16

Reconnect all the displays or decoders using the antenna array.
