- 1). Check each vent and return in your home. Remove and replace dirty filters. Vacuum vents and ducts. Look for holes, damage or disconnected vents. Have your equipment serviced annually.
- 2). Replace damaged or fixed vents with adjustable vents. All vents should be screwed into position to prevent the vent from rattling. Use air flow baffles to direct air flow around closely positioned furniture.
- 3). Turn off vents in rooms that are not being used. Consider blocking the bottom of doors to unused rooms with draft stoppers to increase savings.
- 4). Adjust vents in each room based on how warm or cool the room needs to be, and how far the room is from the heating and air conditioning unit. Use a portable thermometer to check the temperature in each room. Move the thermometer from room to room, allowing it to adjust to a room (even the closed off rooms). This will give you a real understanding of how the vents in your home work. This will also help you identify problems.
