- 1). Open the printer's top cover. Let go of the cover only when the support arm locks in place.
- 2). Wait for the cartridge carrier to stop moving and park in the center of the device. Open the covers over the cartridges by squeezing the tabs on the front. Remove the cartridges.
- 3). Install a black ink cartridge in the left slot and a color cartridge in the right slot and close both cartridge caps so they snap securely into place. Lift up on the top cover, then push the support arm to the right as you lower the cover.
- 4). Remove the USB cable from the printer and the computer. Inspect the cable for damage and replace if necessary. If the cable is not damaged, plug it into a different USB port on the computer.
- 5). Click on the Windows icon or "Start" button and select the "Printers" option. Double-click on the 6170's icon and click next to "Pause Printing" so there is no check mark.
- 1). Replace the paper you have been using with the printer. Select paper that is labeled for use with ink jet printers, not photocopiers or laser printers.
- 2). Only load up to 100 pages of regular printer paper in the printer's input tray at a time. Loading more pages than Lexmark recommends may lead to jams.
- 3). Adjust the paper width guide in the printer's input tray so it touches the paper's edge. The guide should press up against the paper, without making it bow at all.
- 4). Use a level to make sure the printer is on a level surface. If not, move the printer to a surface that is level, since this affects how pages feed through the printer.
