- 1). Turn on the Nikon D80. Select a manual mode or automatic mode for the camera by turning the main dial on the top of the camera. Automatic modes are depicted by an icon of a figure or scene. Manual modes are "M," "A," "S," and "P." In manual mode, the camera is automatically set to allow the user to control the focal points. In any automatic mode, the user has to change the settings to control the focal points. If you set the camera to a manual mode, move to Step 5.
- 2). Press the "Menu" button on the back of the camera. Scroll to the pencil icon on the left side of the screen using the up or down arrows on the multi-selector.
- 3). Select "AF-area mode" and press the "OK" button.
- 4). Select "Single Area" and press "OK." Single Area is the best setting for stationary objects. Dynamic Area can be used for moving objects and is the default setting for the moving object mode, which is an automatic setting symbolized by a figure of a running person.
- 5). Move the Focus Selector Lock, which is located to the right of the screen on the back of the camera, up to the black dot symbol.
- 6). Look through the viewfinder and focus on the subject matter you want to photograph. Press the arrows on the multi-selector, which has the buttons on the back of the camera with an arrow pointing up, down, left and right. When you press an arrow the focal point moves in that direction. Keep pressing the arrows until the focal point is on the subject where you want to focus. Take the photo when you are done selecting the focus area.
