5 Lessons A Poor Beggar Taught Me About The Rich Life

Carl is the neighborhood derelict. He spends his days doing odd jobs or begging on the corner. He does not have a steady job, yet he is always fed, always clothed and he lives in a rickety, but water resistant, hut. Unlike most people, Carl does not spend his time worrying about money, or his lack thereof. He does not own a large and beautiful home, drive an expensive car or sport a designer wardrobe, but he seems quite contented.

What lessons can I learn from a guy like Carl? Read on to find out:

Lesson #1: I'm already rich.

At least I'm well off. I make a decent income, and I live in a nice home. I also have a tendency to overeat. I may not feel rich but compared to Carl I live like a king. Still, it's impossible to get away from the bombardment of images of the Rich Life. The longing for more is the most powerful drive in our culture. The price of our prosperity to other cultures and the environment has been well documented.

Lesson #2: The poor beggar already has financial freedom; I'm still working on it.

The first step in finding financial freedom is to realize that it has nothing to do with how much money you have or make. That is why Carl, who makes so little, is so happy, while someone who makes a ton can be stressed over his or her financial situation. Learn to be happy regardless of your financial state. This will help you embrace delayed gratification, where you postpone luxury spending, invest the money, and have all you want later on.

Lesson #3: Getting rich is easy; being wealthy is a lot harder.

Getting rich is a major ambition for many people. Unfortunately, people give up so much in their lives to accumulate vast sums of money. Unlike rich people, wealthy people are rich in life. This includes financial stability and freedom, but goes deeper into spiritual, emotional, relational and of course physical health. It takes time to accumulate money, and every moment you spend in the pursuit of riches is a moment that could have been spent improving one or more aspects of your wealth.

Lesson #4: I enjoy what I do.

Carl never misses an opportunity to make a few bucks, even if it's just to carry someone's groceries home from the store. However, he does it just to survive, so he can eat another meal. Living the wealthy life frees you to follow your passions in life. It is not enough to want your own business. You must find the business that you are passionate about! When you do something you're passionate about, it's easier to find the energy to be successful at it.

Learn from these lessons, and you will find success that will enable you to live a truly wealthy life.
