- 1). Remove your toilet tank lid and drop the weighted end of your aquarium heater into the corner of the tank. Place a small rock or piece of concrete measuring about 4 inches long, 2 inches high and 2 inches wide into the tank in front of the weighted end of your aquarium heater. A broken-off chunk of cinder block works perfectly for this task, and will keep the base of the tank heater in place while the toilet tank drains.
- 2). Drape the aquarium heater element's cord over the back of your tank, and mark its position with a pencil. Move the cord and gently begin filing at that area with your rat-tail file. Use a fine file to avoid cracking the tank, and carve a channel the width of the file, about 1/2-inch deep. Test-fit the cord into the slot and fit the lid on top periodically so you don't make the channel any deeper than you have to.
- 3). Apply a piece of double-sided tape to the back of the heater's thermostat and stick it to the side of the tank. Plug the tank heater into the closest ground fault circuit interrupter outlet (the ones with the little "test" and "reset" buttons on the face plate) and set the thermostat to the bathroom's room temperature.
