- Since its entrance into the market, MD was always competing with other audio formats. At first, MD struggled against CD and Philips' Digital Compact Cassette. MD then became less popular when MP3 players came out, offering larger storage capacity, an easier recording process and smaller size.
- When MD first came out, it had an obvious disadvantage in sound quality compared to CD. Over the years, MD's sound quality improved, but never equaled that of CD.
- To record files onto an MD, you must plug an MD recorder to an audio player or a computer and play all the audio tracks you want to store. Rewritable CDs and MP3 players let you record without having to play the audio tracks.
