DIY Kitchen Sink Basket Replacement

    Disconnect Plumbing

    • Place a bucket under the sink trap and wall drain pipe. When you disconnect the pipes there will be residual water in them. The bucket should catch most of the water so that the water does not damage the bottom of your sink cabinet. Locate the slip nut that connects the sink trap to the wall drain pipe. Loosen the slip nut using a pair of channel lock pliers. Once you have the nut loose, you can finish removing the nut by hand and disconnect the two pipes.

Disconnect the tailpiece pipe from the bottom of the sink basket. Loosen the slip nut with the pliers and pull the sink trap and tailpiece out from under the sink. There will still be water in the sink trap, so it is a good idea to place the pipes in the tub and let them drain.

    Remove Sink Basket

    • Find the retaining nut under the sink basket below the sink. Place a plumber's pipe wrench over the nut and turn the nut counterclockwise to remove the nut from the sink basket. If the sink basket turns as you are attempting to loosen the nut, have a helper hold the basket steady from above. Your helper can insert a pair of plier handles into the sink basket and hold the basket in place. Remove the retaining nut and the two flat washers from the bottom of the sink strainer. Use a mallet to tap the bottom of the sink basket straight up to loosen the plumber's putty that seals the basket to the sink. Pull the sink basket completely out of the sink.

    Install Sink Basket

    • Clean the area around the sink hole with a plastic putty knife. Remove any old plumber's putty by scraping the putty away with the putty knife. Wipe the entire area down with a clean cloth to remove any small particles of debris. Place a small ball of plumber's putty in the palm of your hand and roll the putty in your hands to form a rope ¼-inch wide. Place the putty rope under the flange of the new sink basket. Set the sink basket in the drain hole and press the basket down firmly and even. Have your helper hold the basket down with their hand.

Go under the sink and place the cardboard washer over the exposed threads of the sink basket and follow with the flat washer. Thread the retaining nut onto the sink basket threads and tighten the nut with the pipe wrench. Go back to the top of the sink and cut away any residual plumber's putty from around the perimeter of the sink basket with a utility knife.

    Reconnect The Plumbing

    • Clean the threads of the wall drain pipe with a cloth to remove the old plumber's tape. Wrap plumber's tape around the wall pipe threads and the threads on the new sink basket. Inspect the retaining nuts on your sink trap and tailpiece and remove any old plumber's tape with a cloth. Although the draining water is not under pressure, water will still find a path of least resistance. Having a good seal around the threads ensures the water will not leak around the pipe connections.

Position the sink trap and tailpipe assembly between the wall drain and sink basket. Thread the slip nut from the tailpipe to the sink basket and then thread the from the sink trap to the wall drain. Tighten both nuts with the channel lock pliers. Place the sink stopper in the drain basket and fill the sink with 6 inches of water. Pull the plug out of the basket and allow the water to drain. Inspect the connections as the water is draining to check for leaks around the connections.
