- 1). Using scissors, cut straight down the center-front of your sweatshirt. Lay the zipped separating zipper between the two cut sides so that the zipper tape is underneath the fabric on each side. Fold the top edge of the zipper tape down so the top edge is laying against the underside of the zipper tape. The zipper teeth should now be even with the top of the fabric
- 2). Starting on the right cut side, fold the edge of the fabric 5/8 of an inch under. Pin it in place. Pin the outer right edge of the zipper underneath the fabric, so that the fabric lies close to the teeth. Leave enough room for the zipper pull tab to slide along the teeth freely. Some zippers have an indented line on the side to mark where you should pin the fabric.
- 3). Stitch down the right side to attach the fabric to the zipper and hold it in place. Remove the pins.
- 4). Keep the zipper closed. Repeat step 2 on the left side. Make sure the top and bottom ends of the fabric are aligned properly on both sides when you're done pinning.
- 5). Unzip the zipper. Machine stitch down the left half of the separating zipper.
