Matte Vs. Glossy LCD Screens

    Identification

    • Glossy screens and matte screens refer to a type of coating that is either present or not present on liquid crystal display screens. These screens may compose computer monitors and televisions. When a screen is categorized as "glossy," it means that the screen is not treated with anti-reflective coatings that reduce glare from sunlight or artificial lights. Conversely, a screen that is a "matte" screen is treated with anti-reflective coatings. Screen manufacturers make both types of screens, and each type may be useful in different situations.

    Matte Screen Pros and Cons

    • If you're using a computer outside or viewing a screen in a room that receives a lot of light, matte screens help significantly reduce the glare that results from these light sources. However, the anti-reflective coating on these screens can significantly impact the quality of images displayed on the screen. Colors may look duller and not as rich on matte screens. Some matte screens may also cause the on-screen image to look hazy or distorted.

    Glossy Screen Pros and Cons

    • Glossy screens provide better picture and color quality than their matte cousins. But there's a catch: You need fairly ideal lighting conditions to unlock the potential of a glossy screen. Rooms that do not receive a lot of direct sunlight or have dimmer interior lights are best for glossy screens. In these conditions, colors are richer and deeper, enhancing image quality. With too much interior light or sunlight, though, not only will image quality suffer on a glossy screen, but the screen may reflect so much glare as to be unusable.

    Buying Tips

    • While the best purchasing choice for a television screen or computer monitor will ultimately depend on a lot of different factors, keeping your buying conditions in mind can help you make an informed decision. Keep in mind that a television screen or monitor, whether glossy or matte, that looks great on a store floor is displaying pictures in ideal lighting conditions. A set that looked great at the store may suffer dramatically when placed in different lighting conditions that exist within your home.
