- 1). Turn off the main water supply to the faucet. This is normally located somewhere in the garage or outside the home. Turn the handle in line with the water pipe. Turn the faucets on inside the house to release any pressure in the lines.
- 2). Remove the cap that sits on top of the faucet handle. Either pry the cap off with a flathead screwdriver or unscrew it by hand. Remove the screw that sits below the cap using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the handle from the valve stem assembly by pulling it off.
- 3). Remove the first nut that sits underneath the handle, called the packing nut, using an adjustable wrench (turning it in a counterclockwise motion).
- 4). Remove the packing by untwisting it from the stem. The packing sits on the threads located underneath the packing nut.
- 5). Replace the old packing with new packing. Wrap the new packing around the threads on the valve stem assembly where the packing nut goes. Do not overlap the packing. Tighten the packing nut back down on the valve assembly.
- 6). Place the handle back on the valve stem assembly. Tighten down the screw that holds the handle in place. Snap the cap back onto the handle.
- 7). Turn the main water supply back on.
