- 1). Lay old towels around the base of the toilet to catch any spillage. Place rubber gloves on your hands.
- 2). Empty the toilet to half full by bailing water from the commode with a bucket. Empty the water down the bathtub or shower.
- 3). Secure a plunger over the top of the drain hole inside the toilet. Grab the top of the plunger handle with both hands.
- 4). Push the plunger up and down briskly for 20 seconds. Lift the plunger from the drain hole. Flush the toilet if the remaining water has drained out. If the water remains, plunge the drain hole again until water runs freely down the drain.
- 1). Stick the spiral end of the closet auger into the toilet drain hole. Push the auger until it stops.
- 2). Turn the auger coil clockwise so the tip spears the clog or dislodges it. If the auger dislodges the clog the water should run out through the drain hole.
- 3). Pull the closet auger slowly out of the toilet drain. Place the spiral tip of the auger and the debris attached to the end into a plastic bag. Wrap the bag around the debris and pull it off the auger. Dispose of the bag into an outside trash can.
- 4). Rinse the auger outside with a garden hose.
