- 1). Mark the drip line for the house with a stake. The drip line is the area where water run off from the roof drips into the yard. If you can't find the drip line make the trench 4 to 6 feet away from the home.
- 2). Dig a trench that is 6 inches wide and 24 inches deep. Compact the loose soil at the bottom of the trench with a tamper. Press the tamper down on the soil to tighten it.
- 3). Pour a 1 to 2 inch layer of washed gravel at the bottom of the trench.
- 4). Place a piece of perforated pipe on top of the gravel.
- 5). Cover the pipe with 1 to 2 inches of larger washed gravel, then fill the trench to within 1 inch of the top with the finer gravel.
- 6). Cover the gravel with soil or a piece of sod to hide the trench.
