- 1). Locate an operational telephone jack. Plug the standard (not homemade) telephone into a power outlet (if necessary) and connect it to the phone jack via a telephone cable.
- 2). Lift the telephone's receiver and listen for a dial tone. When you hear the dial tone, dial the phone number of a friend, family member or loved one (or any other number you wish) to test the telephone. After the call has gone through, hang up the phone and unplug it from the telephone jack. With the telephone jack tested and operational, you may now test the homemade phone.
- 3). Plug the homemade phone into a power outlet (if necessary) and connect it to the telephone jack via a telephone cable.
- 4). Lift the telephone's receiver and listen for a dial tone. When you hear the dial tone, dial the same number you dialed in Step 2. If you do not hear a dial tone, your homemade phone is not functioning. When the call goes through, hang up the homemade phone. If you heard a dial tone and your call successfully went through, your homemade phone is operational.
