How to Change the Freeze Plugs on a 1985 Ford Bronco

    Remove the Engine

    • 1). Disconnect the car batter and drain all fluids from the engine block into a bucket for proper disposal. Remove all belts and hoses from the engine block. Disconnect all wires leading to the engine sensors. Labeling the wires with masking tape will help you remember where they go when it comes time reinstall the engine.

    • 2). Using a socket wrench, disconnect the compressor, power steering pump and exhaust manifold. You will also need to unbolt the engine from the transmission before hoisting it out of the car.

    • 3). Carefully remove the engine from your vehicle by connecting the hoist to the lugs that are intended for this purpose.

    • 4). Secure the engine or an engine stand.

    Remove the Old Core Plugs

    • 1). Locate the core plugs along the side of the engine block that you want to replace.

    • 2). Bore two small holes partially into the core plug so you can grip it with pliers.

    • 3). Twist the plug until it comes loose enough for you to pry out.

    • 4). If the core plug is too snug, then attempt to loosen it by striking it a few times around the edge with a ball peen hammer and metal punch. Be careful to not actually punch the core plug through the engine block hole as it will likely drop inside the engine and damage it.

    Replace the Core Plug

    • 1). Align the new core plug with the hole. Be sure to seat the plug square and flush; otherwise it will not seat properly and may leak.

    • 2). Place the flat punch evenly on the head of the new core plug.

    • 3). Hit the flat punch evenly with the mallet to ensure the core plug evenly expands into the mounting hole so that it creates a leak-proof seal.

    • 4). Reinstall your engine and replace the motor oil, coolant and other fluids.
