How to Change a Pressure Indicating Valve Stem

    Valve Stem Removal

    • 1). Identify the maximum cold-tire-pressure of the vehicle's tires. Replacement valve stems should match the pressure requirements of the tire. Tires with 65 psi or greater require high-pressure valve stems.

    • 2). Remove the wheel from the vehicle and deflate the tire. Push the tire bead away from the rim at the valve stem's location. Lift the tire bead over the TPMS device to avoid damage to the TPMS.

    • 3). Remove the TPMS monitor from the back of the valve stem. Small tools, such as a crescent wrench, might be required to disconnect the TPMS from the valve. Some designs allow you to unscrew the TPMS from the valve. Remove the TPMS according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4). Insert a flathead screwdriver under the edges of the valve stem to loosen the material from the wheel rim. Do not gouge the metal of the rim.

    • 5). Grasp the front of the valve stem with a pair of pliers. Push the valve stem through the rim. Rotate the valve stem to further loosen the valve from the rim. Discard the old valve stem.

    • 6). Clean the valve stem's rim hole with a mild detergent solution. Liquid dish soap and water is sufficient. Dry the area and inspect for any remaining debris or contaminants. Repeat the cleaning process as necessary.

    Valve Stem Installation

    • 1). Wet the valve stem's seating area with liquid dish soap. Apply a small amount of dish soap to the valve-stem hole in the rim.

    • 2). Insert the top of the valve through the valve-stem hole from inside the rim. Pull the valve stem through the hole with pliers until it is fully seated. Rotate the valve stem to ensure the lip of the valve stem is not curled. The valve stem might pop into place as it fully seats.

    • 3). Connect the TPMS system to the bottom of the valve stem, located inside the rim. Any hardware used to connect the TPMS may be re-used if the hardware is in good condition.

    • 4). Pull the bead of the tire over the top of the TPMS and valve-stem seating. Seat the bead against the rim.

    • 5). Inflate the tire to maximum cold pressure. Check for leaks. Check the TPMS system to ensure connectivity to the transceiver.
