- 1). Open the hood and locate the belt routing diagram sticker on the fan shroud. This sticker illustrates the location of the serpentine belt tensioner and the alternator. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery with the battery wrench.
- 2). Move the serpentine belt tensioner out of the belt path with the serpentine belt tensioner tool. Pull the belt off the alternator pulley with your other hand and then let the tensioner move back into position.
- 3). Unbolt the ground wire from the back side of the alternator with the socket set. Disconnect the alternator wiring harness by hand.
- 4). Unbolt the alternator using the socket set. Depending on the engine/transmission configuration in your particular Cougar, you may need to use a socket extension and a universal adapter to reach these bolts.
- 5). Pull the alternator out by hand and compare it to the replacement alternator to make sure you have the correct replacement. If the two are physically identical, move on to step six. If not, take them to the auto parts dealer and exchange the replacement for one that matches your old alternator before moving on to step six.
- 6). Position the replacement alternator in the alternator bracket and thread the retaining bolts back in place. Tighten them with the socket set in reverse of how you removed them.
- 7). Connect the alternator wiring harness to the back of the replacement alternator. Bolt the ground wire down.
- 8). Move the belt tensioner out of the belt path again and slide the belt over the alternator pulley. Move the tensioner back in place and remove the serpentine belt tensioner tool. Reconnect the negative battery cable and close the hood.
