Ford Escape Strut Installation

    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable in order to prevent accidental deployment of the air bag. Place a set of wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the Ford. Lift the front of the vehicle on the side that you are starting with using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the Ford near the jacking point and raise it to the frame.

    • 2). Loosen the lug nuts with the lug wrench and remove the wheel from the Escape. Remove the nut attaching the brake hose bracket to the strut using a wrench and pull the bracket from the strut. Disconnect the ABS harness from the strut if your vehicle has antilock brakes. Remove the stabilizer bar link nut using a wrench and push the bar off to the side.

    • 3). Place the spring compressor on the coil spring and tighten it enough to remove the pressure from the strut. Remove the bolts attaching the strut to the steering knuckle using a socket and ratchet. You may have to use a wrench to hold the nut to keep it from turning with the bolt.

    • 4). Remove the three nuts at the top of the strut using a wrench. Pull the strut assembly from under the Ford. Remove the coil spring from the old strut and place it on the new one. Place the new strut under the Escape and secure it by tightening the three upper nuts with a wrench.

    • 5). Install the bolts and mount the strut to the steering knuckle. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. You may have to hold the nuts with a wrench to keep them from turning as you tighten the bolts. Remove the spring compressor from the coil spring. Pull the stabilizer bar into place and tighten the nut with a wrench.

    • 6). Plug in the ABS sensor if your vehicle has antilock brakes. Attach the brake hose bracket to the strut and tighten the nut with a wrench. Install the wheel on the Escape and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the Ford. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Repeat the procedure on the other wheel.
