- 1). Open the sink cabinet and move everything from under the sink. This will make sure that you have plenty of room to work under the sink. Place a bucket under the sink trap to catch any spills that may occur.
- 2). Locate the stopper rod, clevis and horizontal pivot rod that controls the manual operation of the stopper. The stopper rod is the vertical rod that connects to the pull rod on top of the sink. The horizontal pivot rod connects to the stopper rod and operates the stopper from inside the drain with the use of a ball. The clevis is a small metal band that connects the stopper rod and the horizontal pivot rod.
- 3). Use your fingers to unscrew the thumbscrew that secures the clevis to the stopper rod. Unhook the clevis from the stopper rod.
- 4). Remove the retaining nut that holds the horizontal pivot rod in the sink drain. Use a pair of channel lock pliers to twist the nut off of the drain.
- 5). Pull the horizontal pivot rod out of the drain. Go to the top of the sink and pull the drain stopper straight out of the drain hole.
