- 1). Examine your home for signs of termites so you can point the contractor in the right direction. Some signs of termites are dirt "tubes" or channels on your foundation, squishy areas of wallpaper (indicating termite infestation behind the wall) and small holes in plaster or drywall. But note that termites are very difficult to detect, so not finding them doesn't necessarily mean there are none hidden deep in your walls or wood beams.
- 2). Contact your local Better Business Bureau and compile a list of recommendations for termite inspection services. Also, check with a local homeowner's association to see if people in your area can recommend a service. Finally, check with friends and relatives for any tips.
- 3). Call each contractor and set up an appointment for an estimate. Discuss with them any fees they charge for estimates. If possible, choose a contractor that gives free estimates. But keep in mind that the cheapest company may not be the best.
- 4). Ask them to inspect thoroughly both the areas that you feel may have termites and any areas that seem suspicious to them.
- 5). Ask them to give you a written report of their findings. It should include a description of the different locations of infestation and the severity of each. If possible, get a written diagram for clarity.
- 6). Request a written description of their recommendations and the exact price. A reputable company should have no problem giving you a solid estimate, but keep in mind that the price may increase once the walls or floors have been pulled away. This is not necessarily a sign that the company is trying to squeeze extra money out of you. Termite infestations are notoriously difficult to estimate.
- 7). Ask for a second opinion, if you like. But notify the contractors who have shown up that you are doing so. It shows respect for their time and effort. Also, they may lower their price if they know there is competition.
