Types of Locks and Security

Basically three types or classes of locks can be identified. There are locks that are manual with keys cut to manipulate the detainers or cylinder like metals that move to open or close the lock.

Also there are electrical locks which have components of electrical and even electronic control that are triggered either by a key or switch and which can only be opened or closed when the correct key or switch/electrical signal is sent to the lock.

Then there is the recent or modern day electronic lock which is more or less controlled by programmed codes. These codes can be activated either by use of a card, fingerprints or some other biometric catalyst that has been put into the computerised system with which the lock functions.

Manual locks, as well as a few electrical locks, mostly use keys and have down the line of history been always subject to breakage by thieves. These locks can be broken into due to a host of reasons ranging from bad fitting of the lock, in the very first instance, to wear and tear of the teeth of the key(s) to the lock making it vulnerable to other keys being used on that lock. A particular type called the Euro cylinder door lock has been specially identified to have a weakness that means it can be broken easily and quickly, especially if it has been fitted incorrectly, with the outside front of the lock protruding out beyond the front fascia of the door. When such locks are badly fitted it can easily give thieves the chance to use grips to twist the lock and damage the centre of the cylinder, which is its weakest point, and so render the lock ineffective and broken.

The electrical or keyless locks are more secure to use for as long as those using the lock take care not to expose the lock combinations to all and sundry. However, there are certain types of electrical locks that use keys that are also easily broken into if the front end of the key is altered. This alteration causes the microchip to be rendered dead and the lock remains in the open position even after the key has been taken out of the lock. In such locks another key can easily open the door lock.

In recent times, and from demands due to increasing burglaries, locks have been more of the electronic types, which use pre-programmed computerised codes to open and close after a short period from also a pre-programmed built in timing system. These recent types are more reliable, in terms of providing security, than key locks especially those belonging to the euro cylinder type mentioned earlier.

These types of locks, and more so the ones using alpha-numerical code combinations, are not easy to break into but can be problematic in situations were users easily forget the code. Most have been made user-friendly and this has rendered them burglar-friendly also as the codes are on the card.
