How to Paint Over Shiny Deck Paint

    • 1). Prepare the surface and rails of the deck. Remove any loose or peeling paint by scraping it with the putty knife. Rough up the surfaces with 80 to 120 grit sandpaper. Thoroughly rinse away any dust, dirt or loose paint with a pressure washer. Allow the deck to dry, and use blue painter's tape to cover any areas you do not want painted.

    • 2). Pour primer into a five-gallon bucket, filling it about halfway. Insert the paint roller screen into the bucket. Slide the paint-roller cover onto the roller frame.

    • 3). Use a paintbrush to apply primer to the rails of the deck, before you apply any primer to the deck's floor. Dip the roller into the bucket and rub it against the paint-roller screen to remove excess primer. Roll primer onto the deck's floor, moving from one side to the other. Be especially careful not to trap yourself by literally painting yourself into a corner. Continue to apply the primer until the deck is completely coated. Allow the primer to dry completely.

    • 4). Wash the roller frame, cover and screen, the bucket and paintbrush thoroughly with warm water. Dry the roller frame, bucket and roller screen with rags. Shake the paintbrush and roller cover vigorously to remove excess water.

    • 5). Open the container of paint. Pour the paint into the bucket, filling it about halfway, and insert the cleaned roller screen into the bucket. Slide the clean cover onto the paint-roller frame.

    • 6). Use the brush to paint the rails of the deck before you apply any paint to the deck's floor. Dip the roller into the bucket and rub it against the roller screen to remove excess paint. Roll paint onto the deck's floor, moving from one side to the other and taking care not to paint yourself into a corner. Continue painting until the deck is completely coated. Use your paintbrush to paint any missed spots and hard-to-reach areas.

    • 7). Allow the paint to dry completely before touching it or walking on it. Apply another coat if necessary.
