- 1). Scrub the black algae with a metal bristle brush unless you have a vinyl liner. If your pool has a vinyl liner, use a nylon bristle brush to clean off the algae. Algae will grow anywhere in your pool. Make sure you scrub all of it. Repeat this process several times throughout the day. Once in the morning, afternoon and evening will do.
- 2). Pour 2 lbs. of pool shocker per 10,000 gallons of water into the pool. If you have a vinyl lining, increase the dosage to 2.5 lbs. per 10,000 gallons. You can purchase pool shocker from most pool supply places. Complete this on the same day as the initial cleaning.
- 3). Scrub the algae on the pool walls twice during the second day. After scrubbing the second time, add a metallic algaecide formulated for black algae. Use the recommended dosage on the algaecide packaging for your pool size. This dosage will vary by algaecide manufacturer.
- 4). Wait until the next day and scrub the walls of the pool at least once. Complete this process on days 3, 4 and 5. Do not add any additional chemicals during these days.
- 5). Scrub the pool on day 6 and then shock the pool by adding 1 lb. of pool shocker per 10,000 gallons of water. Use the same dosage even if you have a vinyl pool.
- 6). Scrub the pool on days 7 and 8. Do not add any chemicals to the pool during these days.
- 7). Scrub the pool on day 9 and then add a metal sequestering agent to remove any copper remaining in the pool from the metal algaecide. You can buy the metal sequestering agent from a pool supply retailer.
- 8). Continue to monitor the walls of your pool, the filters and the pumps for regrowth of black algae.
