- A synthetic corticosteroid, prednisone is related to cortisone and contains glucose in its molecules.
- Prednisone is used as an anti-inflammatory drug to control swelling, pain and itching. It can also treat autoimmune diseases in cats.
- At high doses, prednisone can cause higher than normal blood sugar levels and can lead to diabetes in cats.
- Because it raises blood sugar levels, a diabetic cat should not take prednisone, unless the condition is life threatening. The drug can also cause high blood pressure in diabetic cats.
- Antihistamines, changes in diet and fish oil can relieve allergies and itchy skin in cats. Fish oil can also relieve joint pain and inflammation. Diabetic cats with asthma generally tolerate inhaled steroids better than they do prednisone.
