- The first place to start in ensuring your cat's health is with proper nutrition. The natural diet of a cat is mainly raw meat. If you are not comfortable feeding a raw diet, choose a commercial pet food with little or no grain, human grade meat and no byproducts.
- Cats do not have the enzymes that we have in our saliva to help digest food. In the wild, they are dependent on the enzymes they take in by eating live prey. Help your cats have a strong digestive system by giving them digestive enzymes as well as prebiotics and probiotics. Amylase is especially important if they eat grain and starch.
- Animals with strong immune systems are much less likely to encounter problems with parasites, infections and chronic diseases. Give your cat a quality supplement, with herbs that support the immune system such as milk thistle, dandelion, uña de gato, CoQ-10, and astragalus.
- Use cranberry to maintain proper pH in your cat's urine, which can help prevent crystals. The herb chanca piedra (also called quebra pedra) is known as "stone breaker." It can be used to prevent and even break up stones. Be sure your cat always has sufficient water.
- To provide relief from arthritis or keep your cat's joints healthy, supplement a quality diet with omega fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin, and MSM. Digestive enzymes can also provide relief for arthritis and other inflammation.
- In nature, cats keep their teeth healthy by eating raw bones. Don't give your pets cooked bones, though. Also use a natural product like sangre de drago to remove tartar and relieve inflamed gums.
- Your cats can also benefit from treatments such as acupuncture and chiropractic, as well as energy work such as Reiki. Seek a qualified practitioner and be sure to consult with a veterinarian.
