- Topical treatments can be an effective way to cure sarcoptic mange in cats. Submerging your cat in a miticidal dip once or twice a week for four weeks usually kills the mites. Dips include Parabite, Mitaban and Lime Sulfur (which may be less toxic). Also, applying a topical miticidal agent directly to the skin helps cure mange, such as mixing 1 oz. of Prolate/Lintox-HD with a gallon of water and using it as a spray. While these types of topical treatments are considered effective, the medication route is often chosen due to ease of administration. Plus, some cats can be ultra-sensitive to topical miticides.
- Ivermectin is the treatment of choice for sarcoptic mange. Injections of ivermectin almost always successfully kills the mites, when given every one-two weeks over a four-week period. Although it's not FDA approved for this use, your vet should be able to give you the exact protocol. Two ivermectin-related drugs are found in Revolution and Advantage-Plus. Milbemycin-oxime, the drug found in Interceptor and Sentinel, can also be used to treat sarcoptic mange. Always check with your vet for specific treatment protocols, as overdosing your cat on any of these drugs can lead to serious health issues. Besides treating the mange itself, your cat may need antibiotics for any secondary skin infections the mange has caused.
- Treat the whole house. Chance are, the mites aren't just on your cat but in spots your cat frequents as well. To ensure you're getting rid of all the mites, either discard old cat bedding or wash on hot cycle with bleach. Also, wash collars and any other clothing or items your cat touches frequently. If your cat snoozes frequently on your carpet, renting a carpet cleaner will help ensure any mites have been removed.
