- Magic Jack provides cheap telephone service over the Internet.telephone image by MATTHIEU FABISIAK from Fotolia.com
Magic Jack can be a great replacement for landline home phone service. However, if your bandwidth is lower than the requirements outlined by Magic Jack, you may experience frustrating issues with your service. These problems can include service outages, dropped calls and poor call quality. - Magic Jack requires a minimum upload speed of 128 KB/s (or kbit/s or kbps). There is no minimum requirement for download speed.
- Most high-speed Internet services maintain well over the required upload speed of 128 KB/s. Even with the lowest speed package, both cable Internet and DSL meet the bandwidth requirements for Magic Jack. Wireless air cards are also compatible with Magic Jack.
- According to the Magic Jack website, dial-up Internet and satellite Internet are not recommended for use with its service. Dial-up usually cannot obtain the required upload speed; however, it is noted that some dial-up services may work. Whereas satellite is faster than dial-up, it is usually slower than cable and DSL, and may also be incapable of maintaining the required bandwidth.
