Six Simple Steps to Improve Your Home Security

Robberies and home invasions are on the rise, unfortunately.
Many innocent people find themselves in these nightmarish situations where they have little to no control.
It's a terrifying prospect, having a stranger rifle through your things while you're away at work or even while you're sound asleep.
However, there are steps that everyone can take to prevent and deter burglars from choosing your home as their next target.
Read on to find out more about these six home security tips that could mean the difference between being a victim or not.
Really, when it comes to home security, the simplest measures tend to be the most effective.
The first step to having a safer home is assessing your doors and windows.
With your doors, you want to make sure that you've got new, modern locks that won't give in should an intruder try to kick it in.
This means you should probably invest in metal strike plates, inch long screws for the frame and a deadbolt lock.
Also, install a peep hole-oftentimes intruders will simply ring the door bell and force their way in when you open the door.
With a peep hole, you can reduce that risk significantly.
Thieves will find opportunity or barring an easy solution, they'll make an opportunity.
Even if you've got secure doors, there's still the matter of your windows.
Open windows are easy targets.
Don't leave windows open all the way, especially at night.
Invest in window locks with keys.
These lock from the inside and can be easily opened in the case of a fire or other emergency.
Lighting is extremely important.
A well lit property is less likely to be targeted by a burglar because the risk is too high.
A thief wants nothing more than to get in, do their piece and get out without being noticed.
Motion sensor security lights are very effective.
Beyond that, make sure entryways are lit up and try to keep dark, unlighted areas to a minimum, especially if there's shrubbery nearby where someone could easily hide.
This brings up another point, landscaping actually does make a difference.
Trees and bushes can make your place easier to break into.
If you have tree branches near any second floor windows or near the roof, this can make it very easy for a thief to climb up and waltz right into your house.
Also, if you don't trim your shrubs, thieves may find themselves the ideal hiding spot.
Keep shrubbery short so that all entryways and windows are visible.
If you're going to be away for any extended period of time, make arrangements.
Don't let your mail and newspapers pile up.
Put your lights and a radio or TV on a timer.
Keep the lawn trimmed.
Basically, make it look like someone's at home even if no one is.
Finally, consider getting a home alarm system.
Home alarms are proven to deter criminals.
Today, there are all types of home alarms for most every need.
