    Removing the Alternator

    • 1). Remove the ground battery cable (black), using a wrench.

    • 2). Rotate the belt tensioner pulley away from the belt to release the belt tension, using a wrench, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley.

    • 3). Loosen the lug nuts from the passenger's side front wheel with a lug wrench.

    • 4). Raise the front of your Saturn, using a floor jack, and support it with a jack stand on each side.

    • 5). Take off the passenger's side front wheel.

    • 6). Remove the liner from the passenger's side front-wheel well, using the push-pin pliers.

    • 8). Unplug the field wire from the back of the alternator.

    • 9). Remove the retaining nut and wire from the back of the alternator. Use an alternator output stud wrench SA9401C or an equivalent wrench with an open box end 1.5 mm to 1.9 mm (.060 to .075 inches) to hold the stud in place and a wrench to unfasten the retaining nut.

    • 4). Plug the field wire to the back of the alternator.

    • 5). Install the alternator dust shield, using a large wrench, if your particular Saturn model is so equipped.

    • 6). Install the liner on the passenger's side front-wheel well by pushing the pins in place.

    • 7). Install the passenger's side front wheel and tighten the lug nuts just enough to seat the wheel flat against the hub assembly.

    • 8). Lower your vehicle, using the floor jack, and finish tightening the lug nuts with the lug wrench.

    • 9). Rotate the belt tensioner pulley away from the belt, using the wrench; slip the belt over the alternator pulley and carefully release the belt tensioner.
