"Understanding ADHD: Our Personal Journey" should be required reading for all parents, educators and others who live and work with the ADHD Child on a daily basis.
This book was originally published as "Butterfly Kisses" and is a lively and personal account of the life of a young woman, Amber, and the challenges her family faced in raising her to adulthood.
It's a warm, engaging book that is filled with a sense of humor, and not a dry academic treatise.
But at the same time, it gives a brutally honest portrayal of the pain felt by both Amber and her family.
Chapter 1 of the book is the Introduction to both Amber and ADHD.
The 2ND Chapter covers the characteristics of hyperactive children and the problems that they commonly face.
Chapter 3 is Ambers story and it goes into detail about the problems and challenges faced by the McClusky family.
Chapter 4 covers the coping strategies used by Amber and her parents.
This is an extensive chapter that that is broken down into two main segments, Direct and Indirect Intervention Strategies.
Direct Intervention Strategies include things like diet, medication, behavior modification & discipline techniques.
Indirect Intervention Techniques include getting professional help, Finding High Interest Learning materials, finding Kinesthetic/Movement opportunities etc.
Chapter 5 covers the S.

S approach to parenting.
Each of the letters stands for a different parenting principle necessary for successfully parenting the hyperactive, difficult ADHD child.
S M - Special Moments A - Acceptance R - Respite T - Time S - Sharing The remainder of the chapter deals with negative and damaging ACTIONS that parents may be tempted to indulge in.
Chapter 6 wraps the book up and takes a realistic view of the ups and downs of life with ADHD.
It also includes the most recent update on Amber (she's married with children of her own) For me, the best part of the book is the sprinkling of advice and proven strategies throughout.
These are not some fanciful theories dreamed up by a Harvard academic who has never dealt with, much less lived with, a child with ADHD.
Instead they are nuggets of battle-tested advice.
The book is filled with love, hope and encouragement.
I would definitely give this book my highest recommendation.
If you gain nothing else from this book, you will come away with a feeling of camaraderie and a sense that there are other parents out there who know exactly why you're feeling, and that alone, is priceless.
