People have dreaded the thought of their house or apartment being infested with roaches.
They thrive in bigger cities.
Garbage bins and dark alleys are a haven for cockroaches.
In bigger cities you are bound to encounter them no matter what you do.
They will come out in the dark scurrying around in search of food.
They may even crawl over you while you sleep to get to their destination.
But don't worry, because there are a couple of things you can do.
Get use to the fact that they exist.
Like other insects, the cockroach is here to stay.
But, there are things you can do to limit your encounters with them.
For starters, you want to make sure you frequently clean around your place.
Cockroaches don't need a lot to survive, so you should do everything you can to make your house unfavorable.
That means cleaning all bits of food and rubbish that may have fallen behind the stove or couch.
Borax and sugar mixed together, spread around the base boards, offers a powerful and effective dinner for the cockroaches.
After they have eaten, the borax will dehydrate the cockroach.
No matter how much water the roach drinks, the inevitable conclusion is death.
But please use caution when using this mixture.
If you have pets or small children you do not want them ingesting any borax.
If they do, you better call an emergency service or poison control.
There are plenty of different traps you can purchase.
There are live traps for cockroaches but I never understood why you would want to use them.
The best traps are the bait houses.
The cockroach is attracted to the scent from inside the bait house.
It goes inside and gets stuck on a type of glue trap.
Most bait houses are big enough to handle a couple months worth of cockroaches.
You can usually put these traps out of the way but it's not necessary since the look kind of cute.
When the trap is full you can simply toss it in the trash.
Or, if you have access to a fire pit to can simply cremate the remains.
The bottom line is that everyone has encounters with cockroaches whether you're aware of it or not.
Remember, they aren't out to get you, they are just trying to survive like you and I.
