How Not to Set a Silverfish Trap

Silverfish are tough little pests to control.
And whichever type of silverfish trap you use to exterminate them, you want to avoid making the following mistake.
Don't think that just laying your traps without preparation and killing off all the silverfish in your home will get rid of the problem.
More times than not you'll find them cropping up again in 3 or 4 weeks.
The key to successfully wiping out silverfish with traps and poison, is not the kind of silverfish trap you use, but the preparation you do beforehand.
You see silverfish are very long-lived and breed prolifically.
An adult female will live for 2 or 3 years and lay hundreds of eggs in that time.
On top of this your home is obviously a very hospitable place for them if you have an infestation.
With plenty of nice dark cracks to hide in, warmth, moisture and a good supply of food.
And they have some way of getting in from the outside.
So if you simply lay out a bunch of silverfish traps, you may well kill off most of the adults.
But soon enough more will come in from the outside, and the eggs that are hidden in the cracks around your home will hatch, the next generation will come out, and with such great living conditions and supplies of food, they will soon breed and make the problem worse than before.
4 Steps Before laying Your Traps Before you lay a single trap, find the entrance and seal it up.
This might be a crack under a door or window frame, some cracks around piping, or your ventilation hole.
Search all around and make sure it's hard for creepy crawlies to enter.
Secondly, fill in cracks in the floorboards and skirting boards around your home.
Also, where there is excess moisture or dampness, try to dry it out.
Silverfish love warm, moist areas.
Thirdly, get rid of their easy access to food.
Silverfish will eat a whole variety of foods, including your cereals and breads, the glue in your book bindings, even parts of your clothing.
So try to pack all this away out of easy reach.
They will also eat mold and mildew so clean any of this up too, especially in your bathroom.
Fourthly, find the hot spots.
It's best not to lay your silverfish traps all over the place.
Try to find out where they are most densely gathered.
It might be in your laundry room, in your bathroom, under the fridge in your kitchen or in the attic.
Laying out some sticky traps at night will show you where there tend to be more of them.
Types of Silverfish Trap Now you are ready to lay your traps.
And with all the food and good living conditions taken away, you can be confident that the next generation of silverfish will not be able to survive and will most likely die or try to leave.
And with no easy entrance nor will more come trooping in.
You can use two main types of trap - poison traps and sticky traps.
The former use boric acid to kill the little creatures, the latter just hold them in place until they die.
Both are equally effective, but if you have pets you might like to go for the sticky traps and then you don't have toxic boric acid lying around your home, which your dog might accidentally eat.
