- 1). Shut off the breaker switch that controls the power to your HVAC unit. Remove the cover from the existing thermostat and unscrew it from the mounting plate, being careful not to break the glass tube full of mercury inside.
- 2). Use masking tape to label the location of each wire and then unscrew them from the terminals. Remove the thermostat's mounting plate from the wall. Be sure the thermostat wires do not fall back through the wall. Wrapping the loose ends around a pencil or screwdriver will keep them from sliding into the holes.
- 3). Set the mounting plate of the new thermostat on the wall where the loose ends of the wires are. Use a level to make sure the plate is straight. Mark the screw holes on the wall with a pencil.
- 4). Use a small drill bit or narrow screwdriver to punch small holes in the wall where you have marked the screws. Insert plastic screw anchors into the holes, pushing until they sit flush against the wall.
- 5). Slip the wires through the new mounting plate and tighten the screws into the plastic anchors. Use your level to recheck the alignment of the plate before proceeding to the next step.
- 6). Connect the wires to the terminals of the new digital thermostat according to the specifications in the owner's manual. If the ends of the wires are frayed, use wire cutters to snip off the damaged part and strip a new end.
- 7). Mount the thermostat on the mounting plate and attach the cover. Consult your owner's manual for programming instructions.
