How to Install Washer & Dryer Hookups

    • 1). Turn off all circuits before beginning this project.

    • 2). Inspect your wash area to see what kinds of connections are available. Usually there are either electrical or gas hookups. Electric is the most common. Ensure that there are 2 water lines (1 for hot, 1 for cold), a discharge pipe, a 4-foot dryer vent to the outside, and a 220v outlet. Make sure the amperage available matches the dryer that you are trying to use; 30, 40, and 50 amp are the most common. However, a 30 will not fit into a 50, and so on. The circuit number will be marked on the electric service panel, and on the inside or back of your dryer. Also make sure there is enough space for your washer and dryer to fit.

    • 3). Identify the hot and cold hoses attached to the back of the washer. They look like black hoses. Usually they are marked "H" and "C" at the ends of the washer. Two male connectors are at the back of the washer. Put a rubber washer on each of the ends of the hoses and screw into the corresponding hot or cold attachments on the washer.

    • 4). Line the washer up close to the water connectors, but far enough away to still get behind it. Screw the corresponding hot and cold hoses to the right sockets on the wall, adding a rubber washer to the inside of each. Attach the drain hose to the washer in a "U" shape and attach it to the discharge pipe. Plug the washer's plug into the 220v outlet. Push the washer into place, being careful not to kink the lines.

    • 5). Line the dryer up the same way as the washer. Leave enough space to work behind it. Cut about a 4-foot piece of dryer vent and attach with a vent clamp to the back of the dryer. Attach the other end to the vent leading outside. Hold in place with a vent clamp.

    • 6). Plug the 220v plug into the outlet. Do not try to plug the dryer in if it is not a 220v plug or if the house does not use a 220v outlet. This can be extremely dangerous. Push the dryer back close to the wall.

    • 7). Level the washer and dryer by using the channel lock pliers. Unscrew or screw the little metal feet at each corner of the washer and dryer until the whole unit stands level on the floor surface.
