The minerals which have thus been stripped off from water are required for the basic functioning of the body.
Drinking such de-mineralized water for long, leads to the development of multiple mineral deficiencies.
And hence reverse osmosis systems are not recommended by health organizations.
Another disadvantage with these systems is the fact that they are bulky and cannot be customized as per the requirement.
There is no option of installing them over or under the counter, they have to be installed somewhere near the drainage pipe and require explicit plumbing for their installation.

Typically 4-5 gallons of water is wasted for producing 1 gallon of "pure" water.
