- 1). Inspect both devices to determine the type of cable that will be needed. If both devices have an HDMI port, an HDMI cable is best for quality; it also handles both audio and video in one cable. Otherwise, a Y audio cable can be used.
- 2). Plug the cable into the TV first. If an HDMI cable is being used, simply plug it into to any available HDMI port. The Y-cable option takes a little more effort. Locate a pair of white and red (left/right audio) jacks on the TV and look for a label stating "Audio In" or a symbol depicting audio in. Typically, this symbol will look like an arrow pointing into a box, but each manufacturer varies slightly. Insert the red plug into the red jack on the TV and the white plug into the white jack on the TV.
- 3). Plug the opposite end of the cable into the laptop. For HDMI, simply plug the HDMI cable into the laptop's HDMI port. To utilize the Y cable, plug the audio jack into the laptop's headphone jack or another audio-out jack of the same size.
